At Liberty Elementary School we have a diverse set of programs and partners that provide our students with a well-rounded educational experience. These are some of the programs that enhance the learning of Liberty students.
Academic Programs
Our academic programs provide rigorous, data-informed instruction. We track progress in reading and math by determining both absolute levels of achievement and learning growth. All of our students are assessed three times each year using the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading benchmark assessments.

Field Trip Program
We have the most extensive field trip program in Baltimore. Last year, we participated in 93 field trips and/or experiential learning activities. Each Liberty student will go on 6-10 field trips each year. The field trips serve to reward students for their hard work during the school day and supplement their immersive learning experience.

One To One Technology Program
We are one of the few schools in Baltimore City to support a one-to-one tech environment. With over 500 devices at Liberty, students of all grades receive constant exposure to technology. In the 2018-2019 school year, each child will use their iPad or Chromebook to practice math, read iBooks, or explore educational apps. Our students use technology to evaluate and analyze, rather than simply consume, information. From second through fifth grade, our students integrate scientific and creative learning by working in Google Classroom and creating electronic portfolios.

Student Guided Peer Mediation Program
Teaching our students the skills to deescalate conflict is one of the ways in which we cultivate a safe, supportive environment at Liberty. When conflicts do arise in the building, we call upon our twenty student mediators who are trained to help their peers work through disputes. These sessions are overseen by the school psychologist or social worker to offer extra support.
Small Group Support
We place additional staff members in many of our classrooms to provide small group supports. These staff members are former Liberty teachers or community members who work to assist our most struggling students. Additionally, we have reading specialists on staff to provide the highest level of reading support.

Reading Partners Program
Through our partnership with Reading Partners, sixty students at Liberty get one-on-one tutoring twice a week from an assigned mentor. This research-based program enables individual intervention for our students who face significant reading challenges. Reading Partners recruits volunteers throughout the city of Baltimore and provides a full time reading coordinator to oversee fidelity of program implementation. |
Community Schools
Liberty is a community school! With the help of our community partner organization, Child First Authority, we are able to provide robust supports to our families. Magdalena Tsiongas, our Community School Coordinator, focuses on addressing chronic absenteeism, supporting parents and volunteers, and collaborating with school partners. |
Student Mindfulness Program
At Liberty, we work to support kids not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. We have extensive infrastructure set up to support student mindfulness through our partnership with the Holistic Life Foundation. All students take part in two guided meditation periods each day. Students also have access to mindfulness counselors to aid with deescalation and relaxation techniques. |
Liberty Elementary School also partners with The Liberty Judy Center and the Liberty Rec and Tech Center to provide programs for the youth.
The Liberty Judy Center
The Judy Center at Liberty Elementary School coordinates all our early childhood educational and outreach initiatives. They provide play groups, learning parties, parenting classes, mental health supports, and academic programming.
